Deodorants simply reduce the number of bacteria and thus, reduce the smell.  Most 'natural' deodorants use a heavy not-so-great oily base such as:

caprylic/capric triglycerides (palm)
propylene glycol (petroleum)
propanediol (gmo corn)
hydrogenated vegetable oil (soy)
shea butter (latex/refined)

...with minerals, salts, acids, herbs, essential oils, alcohols, etc. mixed in.
